The advancement of contemporary architecture, an expensive endeavor which requires a high degree of social consensus, has depended on various forms of communication with the broader public. Frederick Shwartz, in his book The Werkbund, even argued that the exhibitions and publications at the turn of the century prepared the way for the more radical innovations of the twenties by developing values and desires that those projects then fulfilled, while the post-war discourse seemed to lack the success of this earlier period in relating a system of values that would create a context for new architecture.
