Gramazio & Kohler/CH

Professorship for Architecture and Digital Fabircation, ETH Zurich

Fabio Gramazio and Matthias Kohler are assistant professors for Architecture and Digital Fabrication at the Department of Architecture of ETH Zurich. They are joint partners of the office for architecture and urbanism Gramazio & Kohler in Zurich. Their works include the contemporary dance institution Tanzhaus and the Christmas illumination for the prestigious Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich as well as the sWISH* Pavilion at the Swiss National Exposition “Expo.02”. Gramazio & Kohler are the authors of the book Digital Materiality in Architecture. Their award-winning work is published and exhibited internationally.

The research activities of the assistant professorship for architecture and digital fabrication at ETH Zurich are concentrated on the development of fabrication processes for the additive production of highly informed, non-standardised architectonic products. Parallel to this, the professorship develops strategies for architectural design that are capable of working with these new production possibilities. These are explored within the teaching process in terms of their architectonic, constructive and economic potential. An industrial robot installation developed by the assistant professorship with a processing space of approximately 6 x 3 metres is used for research and teaching and permits the direct construction of building parts on an architectonic scale.
